For the past six years, the Nevada County Branch has worked with Stanford
University to fund a one week summer camp at Stanford termed Tech Trek.
Its purpose is to encourage girls to consider careers in science and technology,
fields in which traditionally men have been dominant. The Branch has sent two or
three girls each year to this summer camp, dependent on available funding. The
reaction to date has been one of enthusiastic acceptance by the girls who have
attended.
During the week the girls are exposed to the varied worlds of science and
technology with actual "hands-on" experience in the various scientific
disciplines and laboratories at Stanford.
Each girl is nominated by their teachers and administrators for their
outstanding performance in their respective school.
We are sending five seventh grade girls to
Tech Trek in July 2004!
AAUW Nevada County is proud to support these students and look
forward to their success at Stanford this summer.
