The Rug Project

In 2003, Foothill Fibers Guild won a $500 award from Handwoven magazine. This award was given in recognition of the guild’s community outreach in the areas of spinning and weaving. Some of the money was spent on inkle looms that the guild could take to public events such as the county fair. This made it possible for kids (of all ages) to experience the joy of weaving first hand. Photos of the inkle looms being used at the Nevada County Fair can be found among our Nevada County Fair pictures.  (click here)

One of our members, Sara Lamb, suggested that the rest of the money might be used for a project that would incorporate the skills of spinning, dyeing and weaving and could also be used for public demonstrations of weaving. The knotted pile rug project was born from the seeds of this proposal.
                  (continued)

Sara donated her time to give
two workshops in which small copper practice looms were built and students learned to do the whole rug making process in miniature. Local fleece from Cotswold sheep and mohair from Angora goats were donated and purchased. These blended fleeces were spun by guild members and friends to use as the warp and pile weft. The yarns were then dyed with natural dyes, many of which were obtained locally. Then the loom was warped and the knotting process begun, just prior to the opening of the Nevada County fair in August 2004.Since that time, the loom was brought to public places during good weather so that Foothill Fibers members could demonstrate the ancient rug making techniques and invite the public to try their hands at the knotting process. The rug reached its completion and the raffle drawing held at the Nevada County Fair on August 14th. The lucky winner was Claudia Montgomery of Washington state, who had heard of the project from her cousin in Grass Valley and purchased two tickets. For a photo gallery of the process and people involved,  (click here). Now that the guild has recouped the money it spent on the rug project through ticket sales, we are looking for another interesting project in which we can stimulate public interest in the craft and art of weaving.
