Commodore's Corner
May, 1999

It was really heartwarming to see the terrific turnout at last month’s meeting. With many tears and hugs, we bid our good friends the Stellby’s "Aloha." In the wake of their last minute packing, they did leave the GCYC with a nice assortment of goodies for our next garage sale. If you’d like a sneak peek, check out the Buti's shed.

Well, Races #1 and #2 have been drowned out and cancelled [#1 due to snow, #2 due to conflicting schedules-ed.]. Hopefully, we will be able to reschedule them at the end of our regular season. Race #3 is scheduled for May 8th. Good luck to all! [8 boats in nice winds/weather; see Race Results]

I’ve been up to the lake and I must say, it’s nice to see boats out there once again. Our dinghy dock is afloat! Scotts Flat personnel will be repositioning it for the season soon. A little reminder, as May 15th approaches, if you have reserved a mooring ball for the season, your payments will now be due. We have heard that all the balls for the bigger boats are full and there is now a waiting list. The wintering SF Bay crowd are bringing all those Catalina 25s back up this week and soon you will see those Tuesday nighters heading up the hill for a little mid-week R & R.

Weather permitting, this month’s meeting will be at Memorial Park in Grass Valley. The Vice-Commodore has advised me he will have the charcoal good and hot at 6 PM. If you’ll be joining us for dinner, please bring something to share. A through L please bring salads, M through Z, bring dessert. If the weather is NOT PERMITTING, Hugh & I will call and let you know we’ll be at the Brewery.

While we are on the subject of meetings – a reminder that June’s meeting will be a week earlier than usual. It will be on JUNE 2ND due to our Regatta on the following weekend, June 5th & 6th. We’ll use that meeting to work out any last minute details. As the Regatta approaches, Don Samuelson will be given an opportunity at this month’s meeting to see if he can’t fill some of those holes in our volunteer list. We are a "working club" and since this is our major event for the year, we are still in need of helping hands to make it successful. The Regatta is the perfect opportunity for some of our new members to work alongside of our more experienced members. And, if you’re not a racer, we have other jobs that are available, like helping with dinner on Saturday night or registration. If you’re handy with a camera, we’ve got just the spot for you. Please give us a hand if you’re available.

For the past couple of years, Karen Fellows has acted as Historian for the Club. She has presented us with a beautiful scrapbook full of pictures of cruises and other club activities. We now find ourselves in need of another volunteer to take this on. If you would be interested, please see me or one of the other board members.

West Marine has generously given us sets (plural) of beautiful foul weather gear in sizes for our Junior sailors. Lynn will have these available at our next meeting. If you are a smaller person or have Junior sailors, these items are well worth looking at.

The Ship’s Store is coming together! I hope to have a sample at the meeting for all to see. West Marine gave us a great deal on some light weight jackets and we are in the process of having our burgee embroidered on them. We have size Large and Extra Large available. They’re going to be a good deal – "I guarantee it!" Hats, polos and long sleeved T’s are to follow!

A sore spot that must be covered—the Commodore’s bell disappeared during our general meeting a couple of month’s ago. So far, it is still missing. Unfortunately, if it does not appear by the end of this next meeting, the club will need to replace it in time for the Regatta. These are not cheap. Enough said.
Enough said.

Fair winds.
