5 Dinghies Kick Off the Fall Racing
Season
Despite low lake levels, 4 Sunfish and
a Lido launch where keelboats can not Kent Bennet (g/w sail), Barry Karr (w/b/y), Jeremy
Gicker (Lido) and Jerry Lewis (y/o) start Race #3
Jeremy heading for the finish of Race #1 (two
Sunfish in background)
After the first race, Cameron Lewis joined Jeremy as crew as the
winds picked up to over 10 knots.
Jerry attempted a port start on Race #2, but
Barry 'starboard'ed him at the pin Barry is just out of the picture on the right, on starboard
tack.
Jerry is taking his stern but loses hold of the tiller when he
he turns down (approx 1 second after picture)!
But then Jerry got Jeremy on the same thing
in Race #3 Note the pin right in front of the Lido 14 as it has
to tack over to starboard and request room at the mark
(Jerry gave room, but a start mark does not 'get' room, there
was navigable water on the other side of the pin)
Jerry and Barry splitting tacks to the finish line in Race #2 Barry hangs on to win by :07 thanks to the starboard
start move over Jerry's port start attempt.
Jerry and Kent heading downwind in Race #2 Trying to catch the Lido 14 was fruitless. We need
more Sunfish!!!! One-design really tests your skills.
Jerry approaching the finish line
in Race #1
Still way behind Jeremy's Lido 14 which has much more sail area.
The Portsmouth handicaps of 99.7 for the Lido 14 and 102.6 for
the Sunfish seem too close
for the 'observed' performance in our lake's breezes.
