Volunteer of the Year/Golden Rule Program
NCLT executive director Cheryl Belcher was selected to be on the Award Panel for the annual "Volunteer of the Year/Golden Rule" program, jointly sponsored by J.C. Penney and the Volunteer Action Center. "Nevada County non-profits exhibit an exemplary level of volunteerism," Cheryl reports. "It was very difficult to select the winners."
Sierra Foothills Audubon Society Bird Boxes
The Sierra Foothills Audubon Society has an active program to build, install and monitor bluebird nesting boxes. The program aims to help provide safe nesting sites to enable the declining Western Bluebird population to increase. Two Land Trust sites offer prime habitat Mathis Pond and Burton Park. The 12 boxes at Mathis Pond increased the local population by 13 birds, while the 9 boxes on the Burton Park property added 7 birds. Thanks to Richard Nickel for building so many boxes, Carole Miller for keeping us informed and to Don Rivenes for monitoring the boxes at Burton Park.

Our thanks to the Heller Fund and to NCLT Board member and project director, Mark Weyman, for giving the Narrow Gauge project some much-deserved publicity and capital to work with!
