Banner-Cascade
Ditch Trail |
Amos and Beverly Seghezzi kicked off an effort by the Land Trust to work with landowners along the Banner-Cascade Ditch between Gracie Road and Red Dog Road to secure trail easements to keep the trail open along the Nevada Irrigation Districts (NID) Cascade Ditch. This is a stretch of open ditch that NID plans to decommission within the next 3 to 5 years. We are concerned that when the canal is decommissioned, the trail will cease to exist.
Landowners along the ditch have easement agreements with NID allowing access for maintenance, etc. The Land Trust is trying to get owners to voluntarily sign similar agreements that would allow continued access to the trail for walking and bicycling. Such easements run with the deed of the property, so even as property changes hands in the future, the terms of the original easement would stay in force.
The Seghezzis responded very favorably to the Land Trusts initial outreach. They grew up here and remember always being able to use irrigation ditch trails when they were children.
The stretch of ditch trail the Land Trust wants to preserve has roughly 45 property owners along it. One important consideration for these landowners is that the Land Trust automatically provides liability insurance coverage on any trail easement it receives, as well as future maintenance, relieving the landowners of that responsibility.
