Place your bets on this trek, ladies and gents! Odds are that
you will end up knowing a lot more about this old mining area than you might imagine. Join
us as we tour the You Bet hydraulic mine, You Bet townsite, and Red Dog cemetery. Former professor of geology and geography, Jerry Pressler, will guide you through the past illuminating the way with his wealth of knowledge. This trek will be a 4 hour ramble full of history, geology and cultural geography. Come along and enjoy learning more about an earlier life in Nevada County! |

beautiful outdoors. Let personal trainer, Gilann Olsen, show you how to use your natural
surroundings to exercise your body and stimulate your mind. No equipment necessary! It's
more than your average hike, use river rocks as weights, stumps for step-ups, climb an
escarpment. Break the monotony of your regular workout and enjoy the scenery! This 4 mile trek will conclude with stretching and relaxation at a mountain hideaway, followed by a healthful lunch on us! Gilann has been a personal trainer and fitness instructor for over 10 years and would be happy to answer any of your fitness-related questions. |

Join solar pioneer (and former Land Trust President!) David
Wright, A.I.A and learn how home design can cut your energy costs. The trek will
begin at 9:15 am with a short discussion of solar design principles and history, recent
innovations and the latest building materials. Then the group will car caravan to tour
local homes built to employ these principles both to enhance the architecture and create
comfortable homes. The design employs optimum use of sun power, natural ventilation and daylighting techniques to create a highly energy efficient and aesthetically pleasing home. In a step further, many of these homes incorporate high technology weather skins and heating and cooling equipment to compliment their natural design. This trek promises to be informative and enlightening! |

might look like? Have you taken time to become acquainted with our local feathered
friends? Come join us on this trek where Mark Chainey will introduce to us many of the
winged wonders of our local area. Learn how you can extend invitations to the birds so that you might have them as frequent visitors in your own garden. Find out fascinating features of the many species that might already be in your yard. Don't miss this opportunity to visit the remarkable haven that Mark Chainey has passionately and creatively designed which hosts countless varieties of birds. Mark has been an amateur ornithologist for five years, and he has combined his talent for photography with his love for birds. We are treated to a beautiful slide show of birds photographed in Marks garden as this trek begins. Afterwards, we will be guided around the garden to do our own spotting, identifying, observing, photographing, and marvelling. This trek will conclude by sitting back and enjoying our lunches. On this trek you will have the rare opportunity to tour a
traditional Japanese home. Learn the philosophy and history of Japanese architecture with
expert Len Brackett. Len apprenticed for 5 years under master temple builders in Japan to learn his trade. Once back in the United States, he and his wife Toshiko, founded a company, East Wind (Higashi Kaze) Inc. They design, build, and then transport Japanese-style tea houses, guest houses, and large family homes all over the United States. Working within the beautiful 'Inimim Forest, Len utilizes century-old techniques as well as modern tools to create these buildings. You will visit his workshop and learn how these structures are built. After the tour, a Japanese luncheon will served. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes that you can easily slip off! A camera is recommended as this is a lovely site. |

Let experts David Steed and Joann Lucas teach you the art of
fly casting and fly fishing. Learn where, when and how to "read" the water to
find the fish! What do they eat and where do they hide? Also, there will be a discussion
on equipment and it's use. With the help of David and Joann along with several other instructors that are well known in the fishing community, you will spend the morning in Condon Park practicing your technique. |

The Nevada County Science Center was created to inspire young
scientists. This trek is designed for children 11 years and up, but younger children are
welcome accompanied by a parent. The Land Trust is pleased and excited to introduce a newly donated property as the site for this trek. It's 38 acres of riparian, meadow, chaparral, mixed conifer and oak woodland habitat is slated as a future park. One of the main uses of the park will be environmental studies for children. According to Lynn Campbell, executive director of the Science Center, "this property offers and ideal outdoor laboratory for studies of Sierra foothill ecosystems." On this trek children will be spending the afternoon at a warmwater pond where they will learn about the plants and wildlife at the pond's edge. They will do a little pond chemistry investigation, then collect aquatic animals and plants with dip nets and identify them with magnifying glasses. The kids will even get to take home a windowsill mini-pond in a soda bottle! |

Join Phillip Sneed, Artistic Director of Nevada City's
Foothill Theater Company for a hike up Canyon Creek, located just east of the town of
Washington. This 6 mile round trip hike will take you to a seldom-visited, private area
where you can view the ruins of Arctic Mine. Learn about the history of one of the more
interesting gold rush sites in Nevada County. This trek starts at the 3,000 foot level and ascends 600 feet. This trek wiil take about 5 hours so please bring plenty of water, lunch and a snack. |

Here's your opportunity to hike a new trail corridor along
the South Fork of the American River. Start your day at the American River Conservancy
Nature Center located at the Marshall Gold Discovery Historic Park in Coloma. Alan
Ehrgott, executive director of the American River Conservancy, will present you with an
overview of their projects and background of the beautiful area you will be visiting.
Then, Alan will lead you on a moderate 4-6 mile hike. You will be observing ecotone habitat with river frontage, a number of creek and river corridors, oak woodlands, mixed conifer, montane, chaparral and grassland areas. This is a lovely area with expansive open spaces and rolling hill to canyon environments. A canyon area bird list of nearly 180 species will be provided for birders! >American River Conservancy, a sister organization to our Nevada County Land Trust has many similar projects. To date ARC has acquired about 2,000 acres of riparian, river frontage and endangered species habitat within the American River watershed. ARC nature Center hosts 6-8,000 children each year for nature classes and environmental studies. Alan Ehrgott has been executive director since 1989. He has a degree in Biology and a Masters in Environmental Administration. Before joining ARC, he led wilderness tours and was a consultant to BLM and other land agencies. The trek runs from 10:00am -2:00pm. You can easily make this a weekend trip, as there are many trails to explore. See where gold was first discovered in California! There is also world-class white water rafting available on Sunday (reservations through American River Conservancy). Call us for a list of B&Bs in the area. |

Leave your critic at home! A fun, refreshing day to see with
new eyes - and to capture on paper. This fresh-air "studio" trek is for total
beginners on up. Janaia Donaldson and Sharyn McDonald will provide instruction on
seeing/drawing for beginners, and will give personal feedback for experienced artists.
Sharyn and Janaia are local artists who have taught drawing with the right side of the
brain, illustration and expressive arts therapy. This trek will be a short, gentle hike to a lovely spot where you'll sketch to deepen your seeing, and perhaps add a little watercolor for accent. Remember to wear sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, walking shoes, and be prepared to layer up or down as weather dictates.
