Treks Through Time
Acorn Grinding on the Lower Yuba

Level: moderate (one steep area)

What to bring: Hiking shoes, lunch, water, sun protection.

Fee: $15 (members $10)

Start collecting your acorns! John Olmstead will lead a hike to a private, remote wilderness area along the South Yuba River.

Visit a special meadow with native plants and grasses, portions of the Far West Excelsior Canal (several miles downriver from the Independence Trail) and a miner’s "camp".

After a moderately steep hike along an old trail to the river, see some of the only remaining Native American bedrock mortars in the area and learn to grind your own acorns. Kids will love this trek!
