From the Gold Run hydraulic mines we follow an
old mining ditch into Canyon Creek and descend a wagon road to the great drain tunnel
where the Canyon Creek Trail begins. Millions of cubic yards of gravel were washed through
the tunnel into Canyon Creek and down to the North Fork American 1000 feet below. The
trail was constructed to access Canyon Creek for gold clean-u, as the creek was fitted
with a succession of sluice boxes between the many waterfalls. In places the trail is cut
into solid rock on steep cliffs. We will descend to the North Fork and have lunch, and then make a slow climb back out, visiting several waterfalls along the way. Wildflowers are abundant. Level: 5-6 miles, strenuous, with cliffs, poison oak. Russell Towle is a historian, geologist, and geometer who has hiked and skied the wilds
of Placer and Nevada counties since 1971. He resides near Dutch Flat. |
