Level: difficult

What to bring: Sun protection, lunch, plenty of water, binoculars, camera and swimsuit is optional.

Fee: $20 (members $15)

Join Randy Oliver on a cross country hike to a series of vernal pools and ponds in the beautiful Grouse Ridge Basin.

These pools are formed from snow melt and enjoy a brief but fascinating life. During their existence, aquatic life explodes into a dynamic community that lasts until the water evaporates into thin air. You’ll be looking for fairy shrimp, ancient order of crustaceans only found in seasonal pools.

This will be a vigorous hike of about 6 miles, all above 5,000 feet.

Randy is an amateur naturalist with a B.S. in Fisheries Biology. He leads stream surveys and nature walks for various environmental groups. His lively teaching style and love of the subject should make for a memorable day.
