Towle Brothers Railroad Hike
with Russell Towle

abstract.jpg (8749 bytes)

Level: moderate,
5 miles with some ravines to scramble across, some brush

Fee: $15 (members $10)

This historic railroad wandered in and out of canyons in Placer and Nevada counties, and could become a trail connecting Highway 80 to Highway 20. It went out of service and the rails were removed in 1902.

We will follow the old roadbed from the Bear River crossing at Zeibright Mine, north and west to Lowell Hill Road. A lovely forest, targeted for timber harvest by Tahoe National Forest, will be passed. Very substantial dry-laid stone walls, built by the Chinese, and several collapsed trestles will be seen along the way. We will also see a rare outcrop of basalt on the divide between the Bear and Steephollow.

Russell Towle is a historian, geologist, and geometer who has hiked and skied the wilds of Placer and Nevada counties since 1971. He resides near Dutch Flat.
