with Russell Towle

abstract.jpg (8749 bytes)

Level: moderate to easy
2-5 miles depending upon how widely you choose
to range.

Fee: $15 (members $10)

This forgotten, secret treasure of the Tahoe Sierra has it all: huge
old-growth Sugar Pines, Ponderosa Pines, White Fir, and Incense Cedar; old Indian trails and grinding rocks; 2000-foot cliffs and fantastic views of the Royal Gorge and Big Valley Bluff. This area could be called Placer County's Slate Yosemite. A southerly exposure and deep glacial moraine soils combine to mimic an ecosystem of lower elevation .

Russell Towle is a historian, geologist, and geometer who has hiked and skied the wilds of Placer and Nevada counties since 1971. He resides near Dutch Flat.
