Warning signs of mental illness


(These usually show up during the midteens through the early 20s. Any of us might have some of them at one time or another, but they call for professional help if they persist or recur often.)

  • Restless traveling from place to place
  • Prolonged / severe depression
  • Marked personality change
  • Flat / inappropriate emotions
  • Confused / disordered thinking
  • Undue / continuing anxiety
  • Tension-caused physical problems
  • Withdrawal from society / isolation
  • Auditory / visual hallucinations
  • Delusions
  • Unjustified fears
  • Rage / violence
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Obsessions / compulsions
  • Substantial, rapid weight change
  • Too much / too little sleep
  • Excessive self centeredness
  • Loss of touch with reality
  • Very immature behavior
  • Negative self image / outlook
  • Inability to cope, overcome problems, stay in school, hold a job, take care of own needs
