 Farewell

This is the last newsletter you will receive from the Pet Adoption League. We are closing our doors.

We are grateful to those of you who have generously supported us through monetary means, volunteering, and adopting. So many animals have been helped because people came together on their behalf.

We have worked very hard over the past 17 plus years for pets and their people in our community and in the surrounding areas. As you know, no one at PAL has ever been paid. Your money was used carefully and wisely. We have accomplished a tremendous amount; you can see our accomplishments here on the website, which will remain up for a few months.

We will retain the Pet Adoption League name and the corporation for now. We'll check back in about a year to see if the community needs our help.

In the meantime, please set aside one day a week to help animals yourself (that's only 4 times a month). Consider:

  • walking a neighbor's dog (if s/he can't);
  • getting someone to spay or neuter his or her pet;
  • taking canned food to the shelter;
  • walking dogs or cuddling cats at the shelter;
  • taking pet food to a senior;
  • encouraging someone to adopt a cat or dog from a shelter or rescue group rather than buying a purebred;
  • writing legislators about something that's dear to your heart (right now everyone should write their representatives to urge them to regulate breeders -- currently breeders have no supervision so animals often live in appalling conditions, and you can bet breeders don't declare the sale of their animals on their income taxes);
  • encouraging law makers to pass a mandatory spay/neuter bill (this would save hundreds of thousands of lives per year in California alone); and/or
  • signing up with the Humane Society of the United States, In Defense of Animals, PCRM, PETA, or other organizations to get their action alerts.

If you need details on any of the above, contact us.

No doubt you can come up with other things to do one day a week to help animals. If you can do more, great!

Thanks again to all of you who love and help animals!

Warmest licks and purrs from your PALs!

Direct Action

Above we mentioned taking pet food to a person in need. If you can help with pet food for someone, please contact us and we'll set you up with somebody who could use food for their pets because they are elderly, are on a fixed income, and/or feed lots of spayed and neutered cats.

If You Named PAL in Your Will

For those of you who have kindly considered adding the Pet Adoption League to your wills, please take us off. We really appreciate you thinking of us, but please consider others now that we will not be around.

We would like to caution you, however. If you do leave something to an organization, please be sure to name a back-up group, just in case they, too, close down.

Also, be sure you really know everything about the entity that you are considering. Get several recent tax returns. Get, in writing, how many paid employees the group has, how much is spent on salaries, overhead, conferences, retreats, consultants, etc., and how much really goes to the animals. An audit, by an independent accountant, not one affiliated in any way with the group, is ideal. You should look at the organization's books, too.

Be very specific in the wording if you want your money to be used in a specific way. Also, appoint someone to make sure your wishes are carried out. Sadly, we know of several instances where it was promised that monies would be used in a particular way, but were not.

We hope that the above doesn't sound negative, we just want to make sure that your wishes are fulfilled and your money goes where you want it to.

PLEASE don't breed or buy while homeless animals die. Adopt a shelter or rescued pet.

Poem for Cats

And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?

Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God.

Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.

But don't they understand? asked God
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined for all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is . . . forever and ever and ever.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am . . . forever and ever and ever.

Food for Thought

Centuries from now it will not matter about the house we lived in or how much money we made in a lifetime . . . but the world may be better because we helped some of God's little animals on this earth during out time here.

The highest realms of thought are impossible to reach without first attaining an understanding of compassion.
Socrates
Compassion for animals is intimately connected with goodness of character; and it may be confidently asserted that he who is cruel to animals cannot be a good man.
Arthur Schopenhauer
The Soul is the same in all living creatures, although the body is different.
Hippocrates
Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not die, so do other creatures.

To me, the Kindred Spirits' philosophy means that there is a much deeper, much more profound emotional and spiritual connection between us and our animal friends. We have to respect and care for them as living beings.
Allen Schoen, DVM
author of Kindred Spirits
I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
Ettiene De Grellet
To know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Animals are really a test of our character. They instill in society an ethic. We can exploit and harm them, or we can be merciful and kind to them.
Wayne Pacelle, President
Humane Society of the United States
The little remembered acts of kindness and love are the best parts of a person's life.
William Wordsworth
Think occasionally of the suffering of which you spare yourself the sight.
Albert Schweitzer
If a man aspires towards a righteous life, his first act of abstinence is from injury to animals.
Albert Einstein
The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites or women for men.
Alice Walker
We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.
