Food Recall
Pet
Food Brands may be fatal
Dear Pet Owners,
As all of you probably know by
now, Menu Foods last week recalled most dog and
cat food brands off the shelves. The recall has
sparked concern among pet owners across North America.
Although it is not clear why 16
animals had died after eating the pet foods, the Food
and Drug Administration has said the investigation was
focusing on wheat gluten.
Wheat gluten itself would
not cause kidney failure, but the common
ingredient could have been contaminated by heavy
metals or mold toxins, according to the FDA.
I wanted to send you this
email because at Housepetmagazine.com, since
October of 2005, I have published numerous
articles on the facts about dog food industry,
what you can do as a consumer and how you can feed
your canine friends with true nutrients that will give
them a healthier and longer life. (Same goes
for our feline friends.)
Whether you choose to feed
your dog home cooked, raw meat, or a vegetarian
diet I have informative articles on each topic in
the archives written by valuable experts. I wanted
to bring them to your attention in this email.
No two dog is the same. It
is only you who can understand the special dietary
requirements of your four legged friend. Some dogs
thrive on raw meat diet, some don't. Some dogs
live up to 30 years of age on vegetarian diet,
some don't. Some dogs get allergies with cottage
cheese, some don't. Doing your extensive research
on food and supplements is a must.
But there's one fact:
Whatever it is that you choose to feed your dog, I
hope the below articles will convince you that
ultimately NO PET live a happy healthy life
eating processed dry or canned food day after day
-
If you have any questions
and comments, let me know. I hope you will find
the below articles informative and helpful.
I would appreciate if you could pass this email to
others

| WHY
THIS VET FEEDS PEOPLE FOOD TO HER DOGS - By
Paula Terifaj, DVM
Before
the advent of commercial pet food diets some 50 years ago,
family dogs thrived from the benefit of common sense and
our grandmother's cooking. Before the craze of pre-packed
convenience foods, the relatives of today's modern dog
enjoyed and prospered eating the same foods we did. That's
right folks -- those dogs belonging to your grandparents
ate real people food and thrived. We are not talking Big
Macs and French fries, just fresh meats, whole grains and
all the vegetables that a dog could dig up in the garden.
Sadly, today's modern dog suffers from the economics of
food technology, which has failed to live up to its claims
of being a "natural" and "nutritionally
balanced" diet....

UNDERSTANDING
THE INDUSTRY
By Animal Protection Insitute
Although a
few dog food companies do a decent job at
providing fairly welll-balanced nutrition for the average
dog, there are some conflicting issues that make many
brands subject to scrutiny before one walks into a pet
store and picks up just "any 'ole
food."Following is a report that explores the
differences between what consumers think they are buying
and what they are actually getting..

HOME FOOD DIETS
By Shawn Messonnier, DVM
Many
holistic pet owners choose to prepare food for their
pets at home. The following information will help you
prepare the best diet possible for your pet. Please work
further with your veterinarian to make sure you prepare
the best homemade diet for your pet or research more on
the processed diets you choose to purchase.
The
idea behind the homemade diets is that the owner will
use fresh, minimally processed ingredients. By offering
fresh food, there are more nutrients in the diet that
would otherwise be removed as a result of processing.
Homemade diets seek to emphasize freshness and
wholesomeness of ingredients. These homemade diets seek
to mimic the diet the pet would encounter in the wild.

| GLUTEN
INTOLERANCE AND YOUR PET By John B. Symes, D.V.M
"Chomp,
chomp, chomp, chomp....GULP. Slurp, slurp, slurp,
slurp....BELCH." This is the sound of "Fido"
eating his scientifically formulated, well-balanced dog
food. It can be purchased at the grocery store, but the
discerning owner travels to the local pet shop to buy the
better quality food. Most people know that you get what
you pay for in a pet food and that the higher grade foods
come from certain recognizable manufacturers and can only
be found at specialty pet supply outlets. But, is that
axiom true? Does purchasing the most expensive food
guarantee that your pet will be receiving the best in
nutrition that the industry has to offer?

most dog owners believe that commercial dog foods are
healthier choices. The truth is most of them
